How To Make a Fixed Link to Twitter That’s Always Visible on Your Webpage

I’ve been playing with all sorts of WordPress plugins for this blog lately, and as I’ve been constantly refreshing and scrolling up and down posts, I had the idea to make a link to my Twitter page that shows up no matter how far you scroll down any page.

Making the link to my Twitter more prominent and “always on top” makes sense if you consider the position of the “Subscribe via RSS” button that shows up in the address bar in most browsers.

We’ve been trained to look towards the top right corner of a page to subscribe to an author. Since following someone on Twitter is just another form of subscription, it makes sense to have a link to your Twitter in the top right of your blog, especially if you’re syndicating your blog to Twitter using Twitterfeed or a similar service.

Here’s the one liner I used to add this link to my blog:

<a href="http://bit.ly/AK" title="Follow me on Twitter!" style="position:fixed; top:3px; right:3px;" target="_blank">@kortina</a>

Here’s a screencast that shows the behavior when you scroll. (Or, you can just scroll this page to see it in action ;) ).

ps. Jing has really been messing with my screencasting. The audio gets out of sync and the video gets cropped short when I upload to Youtube, even for really short vids. Wtf Jing!
